Seems in the last decade keyboard workstations have grown stale...
Innovation seems to have stopped. Which is rather strange in the quickly evolving music buiseness...
I still am a firm beleiver of the workstation as core of my setup..
But also a workstation of heart of the studio
To archieve this the workstation needs to be your gateway to all possible creative tools on your pc/mac and ipad/android devices..
To archieve this the future workstation not only needs to come with its own sounds and tools
But also integrate with other tools..
Being able to function as a high quallity multi channel audio and midi interface for ipad, computer external audio and microphones..
Being able to connect to both the ipad as well as the computer at the same time is also essential
The computer is still the perfect tool for recording as well as expanding the workstation sounds with vst sounds
The Ipad is an excellent tool with all the innovatiive and creative apps to challenge ones creativity, espescially with audiobus3 that turns the ipad in a small workstation.
Its important to have direct comtroll over both devices as well as other connected hardwae from the surface of the workstation..
Personally i would like to see the workstation come with full integration of a single daw..
Or maybe even integration with NI products like maschine.
Why a single daw? Well to make the user interface work for such a daw..
I think a daw is much more flexible for doing recordings then the small screened workstation..
I like the idea of the Montage for using a daw for recording purposes..
I dislike the idea of Yamaha of removing the tools for creating backings from the montage..
Also still integration between the PC and the Montage is sub par.
When you take a look at NI’s latest komplete kontrol keyboards and maschine
Integration between keyboard and VST’s as well as daw controlling are on a different level
I would love to see this inside a workstation.
In the end, we need to step away from the workstation as a single can do all and eveything instrument
But see it as the heart of your setup, which covers most basics, comes with a huge amount of backing tools in all forms..
Why not have a form of arranger in a workstation? Ketron’s latest launchpad feature would be a killer in every workstation..
But also integrates well with all other instruments and musical tools in your home..
Where integration is much much more then just midi controll and audio interface functionallity..
Having a workstation being able to adapt to your latest wishes is what i see as the future of workstations.
I hope you liked the read.
And i hope soon one of the major workstation producers will see the light.
