Is playing arranger keyboards still considered cheating these days?

No , only very stupid people do think so .
They do not have the knowledge which is needed to understand these instruments .

No its not cheating... its just using a tool to be creative... for some the right tool..while others (most witouth knowledge)deem it to simple..
Keyboards are the instrument for those people that want to play covers and sound like a whole band by themselves... they want to make music that theyself and other people people recognise as a cover.
What people dont recognise yet, is that with the right (selfcreated) content, arrangers can become a tool of creativity... for those that dont recognise this yet, have a look at the Casio Mz-X 500.. pishing the arranger into EDM and Deejay land...
I think from all types of keyboards, the high end arranger workstations are the most versatile instruments, for everyone, except the most hardcore purists, that would never use anything else then a true piano or a hammond B3 and a minimoog

No - no more than Richard Clayderman and similar artistes. No one expects that when you hear a string orchestra playing along with him, he is playing all the strings and other instruments too. Take the backing away from all musicians and they will sound quite different without it. Even in a keyboard trio, we don't expect the keyboard player to be playing the drums and bass too. We enjoy the total performance and how that came about doesn't matter very much as long as the end result is satisfying. Tony

Is playing arranger keyboards still considered cheating these days? Has playing an ArrangerKeyboard ever been concidered as cheating? No, not as far as I know about. But, if you only use the akb to load a midifile someone else made and pretend playing the keys during playback, I would say it is.

Interesting topic !!!
I don't play any of my keyboards for financial reward but only as a bit of a get together with family. The reason I say this is because family can talk to me easier than a stranger can. I have had a couple of people ask me if I am really playing the keyboard or whether it is playing itself. I say to them yes, I am playing chords with the left hand and chords/melody with the right hand to which they reply, "but the keyboard is doing it all for you". My solution is to load in a midi file, set it playing and walk away then return and say "that is the keyboard playing itself".
I then pick a style and start playing and say "that is now me playing the keyboard" to which they reply, "well it sounds the same to me so why do you need to play it in the first place".
Then comes my masterstroke. I tell them if I can do it then so can you. I start the style playing and tell them to make it sound like a song.
I've not lost that argument with anyone yet.
However, I still believe they go away thinking the keyboard is doing it all.
Am I bovvered !!!

To me its just a way of perfroming, that i prefer above playing withc a backing track/midifile..
Why? It gives me the feeling that i am in total controll of the band.
In general, i play either with an arranger, or just with a drumtrack and some layered sounds (sometimes with arpeggio's)
Never use midi files as backing, not that i think its cheating, but its just not really flexible...
I know people however, that are great singers, and they trick the people into believing they actually play the keys, but they get great jobs because of their singing performance... is that cheating?

I would say (obviously, as I use them!) that no, it's not cheating. But... it can be cheating yourself if you use them as a crutch against not learning to play traditionally. While one finger chords and Melody Intelligence features can expand on your basic skills, if you use them and cease trying to learn to play more traditionally, you lose a lot of the basic skills and musical knowledge that helps you play better later on. I encourage everyone to continue to learn traditional piano technique, as this will pay huge dividends down the line, whether playing arrangers (some arrangers have extremely good piano following chord recognition, these days, so learning trad piano pays off there) or if sitting in with a live band one day (they sure as hell aren't going to want to play along with your arranger!). Voicing techniques, good controlled legato/staccato technique, all of these make all the world of difference between a ho-hum performance and something that sounds real and alive... So no, arrangers don't cheat. But they can cheat you.

Although I'm just a hobby keyboard player I had the pleasure to play a few times in public, in a local pub or at party's of friends. At one occasion I was joined by a bass guitar player and sometimes my wife and daughter who also play guitar jam along with me. Therefore I use midi files as backing. I connect a 24"monitor to my Tyros and they can easily follow the chords. Also the lyrics are shown and that's important because after a while people love to sing along. So it's in fact a karaoke act. I always explain that the midi is used for backing and that I play along with it. I also show the normal way of playing with styles. Most people don't care, they just want to have a good time. However there is always the typical grumpy guy (it's never a lady who complains about cheating. They come to me when I have a break and start looking at the keyboard saying that it plays by itselve. So at that point I ask them to play a melody or e.g. a bass guitar part of the song and they never manage to get even a single right note out of it. Still I can understand their feelings. The arranger keyboard produces a full band sound and it's only played by chords and right hand notes. I started with piano lessons as well to develop my left hand beyond just playing chords. So I fully agree with Diki's comment above, it really helps!

I think the bottom line here is, if you are enjoying what you are playing, then what does it matter. There are many different ways of entertaining. When someone says to me "Oh that sounded wonderful", thats all I need to be happy.
